N-644, Application for Posthumous Citizenship

The US Armed Forces includes many non-US-citizens who fight and die for the US in times of military conflict. As a recognition of the services of these individuals, Public Law 101-249 allows for posthumous US citizenship to be granted to these individuals who die as a direct result of active duty with the Armed Forces in military conflicts. It is important to note, however, that this type of citizenship is honorary only; it does not grant any immigration benefits to the deceased or their family. To apply for this type of citizenship on behalf of a deceased loved one, file USCIS form N-644 (Application for Posthumous Citizenship). If your petition is approved, you will be issued a Certificate of Citizenship (N-645).
