Trump Continues to Push for Merit-Based US Immigration

On Sunday, President Donald Trump continued to push for a merit-based immigration system in the US. He said there will be no more diversity US visas, and that immigrants should be allowed into the country only if they can help to make the nation strong and great again.

The tweet came two days after the President’s Friday remarks, that an immigration system based on merit would help to take the US “to the next level”. He asserted again his desire to help gain the security and safety of Americans while ending the inflow of drugs into the country. Trump has called for the establishment of a new merit-based immigration system for some time, to cut the amount of immigration into the US, although some nations, such as India, could benefit from such a system.

The current diversity lottery US visa system, which is several decades old, gives green cards to individuals from nations that would not allow them to qualify in a merit-based immigration system. Trump also tweeted alarming news indicating that attempts to save the deferred action program have probably failed. He accused the Democrats of not being interested in saving it, and of preferring talk to action while taking money from the US military that it can ill afford to lose.

The President has also demanded an end to chain migration, the simplest and quickest method of entry to the US, via family sponsorship from a relative already given legal residency or US citizenship.
