Trump Defends US Immigration Enforcement Raids

Trump defends US immigration enforcement raidsThe White House has confirmed it is contemplating issuing a new immigration order now that a US court has stopped the initial travel ban announced by President Donald Trump. On Sunday, Stephen Miller, one of Trump’s presidential aides, told FOX television that they are looking at all options in regards to pursuing their immigration policy.

Miller says the administration’s next step is likely to be going to the Supreme Court to file an emergency appeal, using the lower courts to argue the merits of the executive order, or simply issuing a new one. Miller says that the President’s authority to do what he did is beyond question and they will take whatever extra and new actions they deem necessary to prevent hostile immigrants from entering the US.

Trump issued an executive order on 27 January, which indefinitely halted the resettlement of immigrant refugees from Syria and temporarily suspended all refugees for as long as 120 days. But the ban was struck down by a federal judge and then a San Francisco-based three-judge appeals panel. On Saturday, the President confirmed that he was considering signing a new order, insisting that the security of the nation demanded speed.

Trump has also defended the large-scale immigration raids carried out in the last week. Democrats and immigrant advocates slammed the raids but the President was not moved by the criticism, saying he was fulfilling his campaign promise to crack down on criminal immigrants.
