The Freedom of Information and Privacy Acts in the US allow access to information which is in the public interest. This law ensures that public bodies, organizations, and those receiving public funds cannot easily hide behind hidden information. However, this type of public information is not always simply available through a library or database; due to the sensitive nature of some of this information, it must be requested. For example, if you wish to receive information covered by the Freedom of Information and Privacy Acts from the USCIS, you will need to file Form G-639. It is important to note that not all requests can atomically be approved; submitting the request does not guarantee that you will be entitled under law to the information you are requesting.
