How to apply for re-entry permit
While U.S. permanent residents are allowed to travel outside the U.S. and return, there are some situations where reentry is limited. Getting a reentry permit can help prevent a green card from becoming invalid or for permanent residency to be considered abandoned if the permanent resident leaves the country for one year or longer. Reentry permits are generally valid for two years. It is important to apply for a reentry permit before leaving the U.S.
Steps to apply for re-entry permit
1. The applicant completes Form I-131, Application for a Travel Document, with all necessary information.
The following documents need to be attached with the application:
- Copy of the front and back of the Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt Card; or
- Copy of the biographic page of the passport and a copy to prove that they are a permanent resident
- Copy of the Form I-797, Notice of Action
2. The applicant includes the filing fee along with the application.
The filing fee is:
- If the applicant is 13 years or younger- $360
- If the applicant is between 14 and 79 years- $360 plus $85 biometric fee
- If the applicant is 80 years or older- $360
3. The applicant files the application.
The filing address depends on the location of the applicant. Filing addresses can be found on the I-131 application instructions.
4. The applicant awaits confirmation from USCIS.
If the applicant has attached a completed Form G-1145, Notification of Acceptance of Application/Petition, with the application, they will receive an email/text message, when their application has been accepted.
