How to Become a Naturalized Citizen of U.S.
To apply for naturalization, you will need to file Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. You must be eligible for naturalization before you file. There are various criteria to qualify you for naturalization.
Steps to Become a Naturalized Citizen of U.S.
1. Read the instructions on naturalization and make sure you are eligible to apply. You are eligible to file for naturalization if:
- You have been a permanent resident for three to five years, and meet all other eligibility requirements;
- You are married to a U.S. citizen, have been a permanent resident for 3 years or more, and meet all other eligibility requirements;
- You have qualifying service in the U.S. armed forces and meet all other eligibility requirements; or
- You have parents who are U.S. citizens, and you meet all other eligibility requirements.
2.Complete USCIS form N-400, Application for Naturalization.
3. Prepare the package of necessary documents and passport-style photographs.
4. The applicant visits the U.S. embassy or consulate on the Send your application package and filing fee to the appropriate Lockbox Facility or Service Center.
5. You will receive an appointment letter for biometric services from USCIS. Visit a USCIS fingerprinting location and have fingerprints taken.
6. You will also receive an appointment for an interview with a USCIS officer. Go to your local USCIS office at the specified time for the interview and citizenship test.
7. Take state-issued identification, Permanent Resident Card, and any additional documents specific to your case.
8. If the interview and test are successful, you will be approved for naturalization and scheduled for the oath or swearing in ceremony.
9. The oath or swearing in ceremony is the final step in becoming a U.S. citizen. In this ceremony, you will pledge your allegiance to the U.S. and receive a Certificate of Naturalization, officially becoming a U.S. citizen.
