How to File for Dual Citizenship

Dual citizenship means that you can be the citizen for two countries at the same time. Each country has its own citizenship laws based on its own policy. Some countries do not allow dual citizenship, and require the denouncement of the former citizenship before granting the new one. However, the U.S. allows its citizens to hold a second nationality with any nation the individual qualifies to hold one with, whether earned through descent, marriage or residency.

Steps to File for Dual Citizenship

If you are a citizen of another country applying for U.S. citizenship:

1. Check if your home country permits dual citizenship. Proceed with the application only if it is permitted.

2. Complete and submit Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.
