How to file form I-134

Deferred Action – Supporting Documents

Form I-134 is an Affidavit of Support, a legal contract which proves someone is financially capable of taking care of another person. Affidavits of Support are used in immigration because the U.S. government wants to make sure that all new immigrants have a means of support in the U.S. In case the new immigrant has a hard time, there will be someone who can help him or her financially.

Form I-134 is required with all family-based visa applications and some employment-based visa applications. It is to be completed by the visa applicant’s sponsor (their U.S. relative or employer).

Steps to file form I-134

1. The sponsor (relative or employer of the applicants) completes Form I-134.

2.The sponsor attaches the following required documents to the form:

  • Copy of most recent Federal Tax Return
  • Employee’s letter
  • Letter from banks confirming the accounts
  • Deeds or receipts of any assets

3. The sponsor signs Form I-134 with his or her full name and then mails the original to the applicants, so that they can include it with their visa application or bring it to the U.S. consulate or embassy where they are having their visa interview.
