How to File Form I-9
The I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification Form, has to be completed by both the employer and the employee. This form must be retained by the employer for a specific period and must be made available for inspection by authorized government officers.
Steps to File Form I-9
1. The employee completes Form I-9 with their personal information, which includes:
- Name/other names used if any
- Address
- Date of birth
- U.S. Social Security Number
- Email address and telephone number (optional)
2. The employee provides evidence of their identity and work authorization.
Evidence of identity could include a driver’s license or military ID. Evidence or work authorization could include an EAD card. A U.S. passport or permanent resident card (green card) serves as evidence for identity and work authorization.
3. The employer examines the documents submitted by the employee to determine if they are genuine.
4. The employer and employee sign Form I-9.
5. The employer files the employee’s documents for reference.
