How to Get American Citizenship
The process of becoming an American citizen is called naturalization. To apply for naturalization, file Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. Before applying, the applicant should ensure that he/she meets all eligibility criteria.
Steps to Get American Citizenship
1. The applicant should read the instructions on naturalization application and make sure he/she is eligible to apply.
In most cases the eligibility requirements are:
- Three to five years of permanent residency
- Be of good moral character (not have committed any felonies or other serious crimes)
- Be loyal to the U.S. constitution and its laws
- Meet a residency requirement
2. Complete Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.
The applicant will need to include the following documents with their application:
- Two passport-style photographs
- A copy of their green card (front and back)
Other documents may be required as well, depending on the applicant. For example, if the applicant has been arrested or conviceted of a crime, they must include a certified copy of the arrest report.
3. Prepare the package of necessary documents.
4. Send your application package and filing fee to the appropriate Lockbox Facility or Service Center.
5. Receive an appointment letter for biometric services from USCIS.
Visit a USCIS fingerprinting location and have fingerprints taken.
6. Receive an appointment for an interview with a USCIS Officer.
Go to a USCIS office at the specified time for the interview. The applicant should bring state-issued identification, Permanent Resident Card, and any additional documents specific to his/her case.
7. If the interview is successful, the oath ceremony will follow, where the applicant will take Oath of Allegiance and receive a Certificate of Naturalization (N-570) to prove that he/she is now a U.S. citizen.
