When an individual becomes a citizen through the naturalization process, they receive a Certificate of Naturalization. If an individual obtains derived citizenship through their U.S. citizen parent(s), they receive a Certificate of Citizenship. These documents prove they are U.S. citizens. If lost, both certificates can be replaced by filing Form N-565, Application for Replacement Naturalization/Citizenship Document.

Steps to Get a Copy of a Naturalization Certificate

1. The applicant completes Form N-565, Application for Replacement Naturalization/Citizenship Document.

Attach two passport style photos, taken within 30 days to the application.

2. The applicant includes the filing fee of $345 with the application.

It is payable by check or money order drawn from a bank or financial institution located in the U.S. and made payable to the “Department of Homeland Security”.

3. The applicant submits the application at either the USCIS Nebraska or Texas Service Center, depending on the state where they live.

4. The applicant may be asked to submit additional information or appear for an interview.

If USCIS feels they need more information to process the application, they may request the applicant submit additional documents, original documents, or to appear in-person for an interview.

5. The applicant awaits a decision from USCIS.

USCIS will verify the application and if approved, the applicant will receive a copy of the certificate by mail.
