An Employment Authorization Document (EAD card), also known as a work permit, is a legal document issued by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to grant you the legal right to work in the U.S. The application for employment authorization is also known as form I-765. An EAD card is issued for a specified period of time based on your immigration situation.

Steps to File I-765

1. Prepare the I-765 form.

2. Check the category under which you are eligible to file I-765:

  • Asylee/Refugee Categories
  • Nationality Categories
  • Foreign Students
  • Employment-Based Nonimmigrant Categories
  • Family-Based Nonimmigrant Categories
  • Other Categories

3.  Fill the form and file the I-765 along with the fee of $380.

4. After you have paid, you will receive an electronic confirmation receipt including the receipt number.

5. Mail the required supporting documents listed in the form instructions to the address listed on the confirmation receipt.

6. You will receive a Form I-797 (Notice of Action) from USCIS, indicating that your application has been received. If biometric services are required, you need to complete those at an Application Support Center.

7. The USCIS office where your case is assigned will adjudicate your application.
