B-2 visas are issued to those who wish to visit the U.S. for a short and specific period. The purpose of the visits could be either of the following:

  • Vacation or visiting with friends or relatives;
  • Medical treatment, for which you must submit proof of your ailment and the reason why you prefer to treat it in the U.S.;
  • Participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organization;
  • Participation by amateurs in musicals, sports, or similar events or contests, provided you are not paid for it; or
  • Enrollment in a short recreational course of study, while on vacation and one that does not earn you a degree.

Steps to Get B-2 Visa

1. Complete the DS-160, Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application, and print the confirmation page. You must present this at the time of interview.

2. Schedule an interview at your local U.S. embassy or consulate.

3. Keep the following documents ready for the interview:

  • Your valid passport,
  • Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 confirmation page,
  • Application fee payment receipt,
  • Your photo, in case you are unable to upload it while completing the online DS-160,
  • Evidence to prove your purpose of visit,
  • Proof that you can support yourself financially, during your visit, and
  • Your intent to leave U.S after your visit.

4. Pay the non-refundable visa application fee of $160 before the interview, if needed.

5. Attend the interview, where the consular officer will decide if you qualify for the visa and if so, under which category.

6. In most cases, your finger-print scans will be taken during the interview, as part of the application process.

7. If your visa is approved, you must pay the visa issuance reciprocity fee, and this fee varies by nationality.

8. You will be informed how your passport with visa will be returned to you.
