How to File Form I-864
Form I-864, Affidavit of Support, is used for most family-based immigrant applications and some employment-based immigrant applications. The form is to be completed by the immigrant’s sponsor (U.S. relative or employer) to show that they can offer financial support to the immigrant once they are in the U.S.
Steps to File Form I-864
1. The U.S. sponsor completes USCIS Form I-864.
2. The sponsor prepares the application package with the following required documents:
- Federal Income Tax Returns – complete federal tax returns with all supporting schedules for the three most recent tax years
- Evidence of assets held with proof of ownership, location and the value of each asset, along with evidence of liens, mortgages and liabilities (if any) for each asset
- Evidence of current employment or self-employment, such as a recent pay statement or a statement from the applicant’s employer on business stationery. The letter from the employer should show the beginning date of employment, type of work the sponsor does and how much money he/she makes.
3. The sponsor sends Form I-864 to the applicant to carry at the time of the visa interview.
