How to File Form N-600
A Certificate of Citizenship is a document proving U.S. citizenship. When applying for jobs or immigration benefits, proof of citizenship may be necessary. To apply for a Certificate of Citizenship, use USCIS Form N-600.
Steps to File Form N-600
1. The applicant determines if he is eligible for a Certificate of Citizenship.
To qualify for a Certificate of Citizenship, the applicant must:
- Be the child of a U.S. citizen(s) (by birth or adoption)
- Have been lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence before the age of 18
- Have lived in the U.S. in the legal and physical custody of their U.S. citizen parent(s) before the age of 18
2. The applicant completes Form N-600.
The applicant should include the following documents with the application:
- Filing fee of $600 made payable to “U.S. Department of Homeland Security” *
- Two recent and identical passport-style photographs
- A copy of the applicant’s birth certificate or registration of birth abroad
- A copy of the applicant’s parent’s (U.S. citizens) birth certificates
- A copy of the applicant’s parent’s (U.S. citizens) marriage certificate
- A copy of the front and back sides of the applicant’s U.S. permanent resident card (if applicable)
*There are certain exceptions, and they are:
- The filing fee is $550 for an adopted child
- There is no filing fee for a member or veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. Proof of service must be submitted. However, the fee for a child of a veteran or member of the U.S. Armed Forces is the normal $600 fee ($550 if child is adopted).
3. The applicant submits Form N-600 with filing fee and required documents to USCIS.

4. The applicant awaits confirmation from USCIS.
If the applicant has attached a completed Form G-1145, Notification of Acceptance of Application/Petition with the application, they will receive an email/text message, when the application has been accepted. Applicants will be issued a receipt number, which can be used to track the application.
5. If the application is approved, the applicant will receive their Certificate of Citizenship in the mail.
