uscis services

Foreign nationals who wish to study in the U.S. need a student visa. There are three types of student visas: M-1, F-1, and J-1. M-1 visas are for vocational study, such as mechanic school or a language training program. F-1 visas are for academic study. J-1 visas are exchange visas for temporary study in an exchange program at a U.S. university or college.

Steps to Determine what Student Visa I Need

1. The applicant determines the type of program they want to attend.

The type and length of the program will determine which visa the applicant should apply for.

  • If the student plans to attend high school, private elementary school, a college or university or any other accredited academic institution, he/she needs to apply for the F-1 visa.
  • If the student plans to attend a U.S. institution for non-academic or vocational study or training, other than a language-training program, then he/she needs to apply for the M-1 visa.
  • If the student plans to participate in an exchange program, including those programs that provide high school and university study, then he/she needs to apply for the J-1 visa.
  • If the student plans to enroll in a short recreational course of study, which is not for credit toward a degree or academic certificate, he/she can apply for a visitor visa (B).

2. The applicant contacts a the program advisor in the U.S. to determine if they are eligible to apply.
