I-864P, Poverty Guidelines

In cases where a US citizen decides to sponsor someone to come to the US, one of the major elements of the application will include proof of financial information. The US citizen will need to prove that he or she has enough money, assets, or income to support the person being sponsored. This is to ensure that the new arrival will not place a burden on the social benefits system of the United States. In order to prove that this will not happen, in many cases a sponsor must file Form I-864 (Affidavit of Support). In this form, the sponsor must show that he or she is above a certain standard of the poverty guidelines, as defined under Section 213A of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
