Class of Admission Form I-90

Green CardYou can find your Class of Admission also known as the category number on the front side of your permanent resident card.

If you are filling out Form I-90 to get your green card renewed or replaced, you would have probably stumbled across the term Class of Admission. Many are unaware of the Class of Admission also known as category codes that are printed on their green cards. Many wonder what these codes are only when they complete their Form I-90 and when they come across the term “Class of Admission.”

Your Class of Admission will be asked on Question Number 14 in Part 1 on your Form I-90. Here, you will need to enter the category number that is printed on the front side of your resident card below the word “Category.” If you hold an older version of the green card, you may not find it on the front side of your green card.

This number represents the visa category under which you were granted legal permanent resident status or a conditional permanent resident status in the U.S. The Class of Admission also known as category is a three character code, two letters followed by a number.

Examples of Class of Admission

There are many three character codes that relate to the different immigrant visa categories. Here are some examples.

If your category is B24, you will be identified as “Self Petition Unmarried Son/daughter of legal permanent resident – Family sponsored second preference”

If your category is B31, you will be identified as “Self Petition Married Son/daughter of U.S. Citizen – Family sponsored Third preference”

You can find the complete list of category numbers here. However, the best way to know what your category number is, is by looking at your permanent resident card. If you hold an older version of the green card, you may find the category next to class or somewhere else in the card.

The following is the official form instruction from USCIS for Question Number 14 on Form I-90.

“Item Number 14. Class of Admission. List the three character code for the immigrant category under which you were granted lawful permanent resident or conditional permanent resident status. This code can be found on your Permanent Resident Card, and it is typically one or two letters followed by a number (for example, IR2).”
